UK Students Struggle with Independent Living, Poll Finds

More than half of British students feel unprepared for living away from home, a poll suggests, with many admitting to struggling with basic household tasks and finances. Research by mobile network Vodafone found that 54% of young people are caught off-guard by the realities of shared accommodation, from splitting bills to managing internet access.

A significant portion of students admitted to calling home for assistance with everyday chores and responsibilities. A quarter of those polled contacted their parents for help setting up an internet connection, while a third found utility bills confusing. Additionally, one-fifth sought guidance on laundry temperatures and food preparation.

Financially, many students underestimated the cost of living independently. The survey revealed that 63% misjudged the expense of food, and half failed to anticipate accommodation costs. Disputes over broadband usage were also common, with half of respondents reporting arguments with flatmates about internet bandwidth and billing.

Etiquette expert Jo Bryant commented on the findings, noting that university represents a major step toward independence, often involving the first experience of managing a household with others. She emphasized that establishing clear agreements from the outset can mitigate potential friction.

"From working out who pays which bill to agreeing on household chores and making sure everyone can get online, there are lots of new things to figure out – and sometimes those little decisions can create friction between housemates," Bryant said. "Making things simple from the start can make a big difference."

To address these issues, Vodafone is promoting a new 5G home broadband plan designed for students. The service requires no engineer visit and offers special pricing, with a 50Mbps plan at £20 per month and a 150Mbps connection at £21 per month, both on 12-month contracts accessible through student platforms.

Bryant offered several tips for harmonious student living, including managing expectations, keeping shared spaces tidy, establishing chore rotas, and communicating openly about finances and household rules. She also advised being mindful of noise levels and checking in on the well-being of housemates.
