UK Seizes 25 Boats Destined for People Smugglers at East Midlands Airport

UK Border Force and the National Crime Agency (NCA) have seized 25 inflatable boats intended for people smugglers at East Midlands Airport. The vessels, each capable of carrying approximately 70 individuals, were discovered hidden in pallets within an air freight shipment originating from Turkey and destined for the Netherlands.

The consignment passed through the airport's freight hub, allowing authorities to intercept the boats on October 2. This marks the first time a significant quantity of small-boat equipment destined for Channel crossings has been intercepted via air freight.

This seizure follows a similar interdiction in July, when 25 boats and 25 engines were confiscated from a maritime consignment at the port of Felixstowe. That shipment was en route to Germany.

Authorities are intensifying efforts to disrupt the supply chains used by criminal gangs organizing small-boat crossings. Craig Turner, NCA Deputy Director of Investigations, stated that the agency is targeting overseas and domestic suppliers of boats and engines, leading to the seizure of over 1,600 such items to date. He indicated that these disruptions are increasing costs for criminal networks and making it more difficult for them to procure equipment.

The NCA is currently investigating approximately 100 cases of organized immigration crime. An agency assessment last month highlighted that restrictions on boat and engine supplies are a key factor impacting smuggling groups. The assessment also credited law enforcement activity with reducing illegal small-boat crossings to Britain in the first half of 2026.

NCA-linked arrests for organized immigration crime saw a rise of over 55% in the year leading up to April 2026. Minister for Border Security and Asylum, Anna Turley, described the seizure as another blow to smuggling gangs and noted that disruptions to supply lines are increasing. She reported that this summer saw the lowest number of small boat arrivals since 2020, with arrests for immigration crime up 74% compared to the previous year.

Despite these efforts, thousands of migrants continue to attempt the Channel crossing. Official figures indicate that 19,869 migrants have made the journey so far this year in nearly 300 boats. The NCA emphasizes the importance of intercepting equipment before it reaches the coast and is handed to people smugglers.
