UK Scraps 'One In, One Out' Migrant Scheme With France

The United Kingdom has ended its "one in, one out" agreement with France, a pilot scheme that aimed to facilitate the return of migrants crossing the English Channel.

The initiative, which began just over a year ago, allowed for the UK to send back some individuals arriving by small boats in exchange for admitting an equal number of people from France deemed to have legitimate claims for entry to Britain. However, the scheme saw fewer than 1,500 people removed to France since its inception.

While the UK government reportedly wished to continue the program, it was perceived as not achieving the desired scale of operations. A Home Office spokesperson stated that "lessons learned" from the pilot would be utilized to "accelerate efforts" to deport small boat migrants who do not have the right to remain in the UK.

"The government's pilot with France to remove asylum seekers in exchange for an equal number of legal migrants is no longer processing new cases," the spokesperson said. "However, flights will continue over the coming weeks to swiftly remove small boat migrants from the UK, and we will use lessons learned from the pilot to accelerate efforts to return small boat migrants with no right to remain in the UK."

Officials also indicated that cooperation with France on tackling small boat crossings would persist, noting that "real progress" had been made, with numbers significantly down compared to the previous year.

The French Interior Ministry confirmed discussions with the British government regarding the terms of the agreement's termination. The scheme's discontinuation comes amid ongoing efforts by both nations to manage irregular migration across the Channel.
