The United Kingdom is reviewing its agreement to transfer the Chagos Islands to Mauritius after U.S. President Donald Trump described the deal as "terrible" at the United Nations General Assembly.
U.K. Defence Secretary Wes Streeting announced that the review is necessary because "the United States doesn't support it." The original pact would have seen the U.K. cede sovereignty of the territory to Mauritius. In exchange, the U.K. would lease back a joint U.K.-U.S. military base located on the islands for an average of $136 million annually. The base is considered strategically important due to its location in the Indian Ocean.
