UK Private School Closes Amidst VAT Fee Debate
Leweston School, with notable alumni, cites financial pressures as it shuts its doors after 135 years.
Leweston School, a 135-year-old private institution in Dorset, England, has announced its closure effective after the October half-term break. The Catholic co-educational school informed families and staff of the sudden decision with little notice, apologizing for the disruption. Students are being offered places at other schools within the Inspired Learning Group, including Clayesmore School and Sunninghill Prep.
This closure comes amidst a period of financial strain for private schools in the United Kingdom, with the Independent Schools Council reporting that over 100 such institutions have shut down since the introduction of a Value Added Tax (VAT) on school fees. The Labour party introduced the 20 percent tax, stating it would fund improvements to the state education system and the hiring of new teachers. However, critics argue that the tax has disproportionately impacted smaller, less expensive private schools, making them financially unviable.
Leweston School, which catered to approximately 500 students from nursery to sixth-form, was founded in 1891. Its notable alumni include actress Dame Kristin Scott Thomas and Baroness Dido Harding, who led the NHS test and trace program during the COVID-19 pandemic. The school's annual fees could reach up to £14,990 per term.
Edward Morello, the Member of Parliament for West Dorset, expressed concern over the closure, calling it a "shock and a travesty." He stated that his priority is assisting the affected students, families, and staff, noting that some staff had not been paid this month. Questions have been raised about the school's ownership and management.
The school, previously known as St Antony's and St Joseph's schools, was renamed Leweston School in 2007 and transitioned to full co-education in 2018. In November of the previous year, the school announced a partnership with Concept Education and the Catholic Schools' Trust. Concept Education has been contacted for comment regarding the closure.
