Rebecca Green, a 29-year-old prison officer, has been sentenced to one year and four months in prison for engaging in a relationship with a convicted murderer while working at HMP Whitemoor, a maximum-security facility. The sentence was handed down at Cambridge Crown Court on June 24.
Green began the relationship with inmate John Otugade, 33, in October 2022. Otugade is serving a life sentence for a 2010 murder, with a minimum term of 25 years, for shooting a nightclub bouncer after being denied entry. Suspicion surrounding Green's conduct arose in the spring of 2023, prompting authorities to move Otugade to HMP Belmarsh in south-east London during an investigation.
An examination of Green's mobile phone, seized from her car, revealed messages that confirmed the relationship. Further evidence emerged when it was discovered that Otugade had added a contact under the name 'partner' to his approved list within the prison, which was later identified as belonging to Green.
Green pleaded guilty to misconduct in a public office. Detective Constable Tom Adams, who led the investigation, stated that Green’s actions constituted a serious breach of her responsibilities, undermining the safety and security of the prison and its staff. He emphasized that the sentence reflects the seriousness with which such breaches are viewed by the police and courts.
This incident highlights a growing trend within the UK's prison system. According to recent figures, the number of female prison officers dismissed for forming inappropriate relationships with inmates has tripled in recent years. Over the past four years, 40 female wardens have been fired for such offenses. In contrast, only one male officer was dismissed for a similar relationship with a female inmate during the same period. The Ministry of Justice also reported a small number of cases involving same-sex relationships between officers and inmates that led to dismissals. Another case involved Kyra Dancer, 23, who faced misconduct charges for an alleged inappropriate relationship with an inmate at a G4S-operated facility in Wellingborough.
