A prison nurse has appeared in court facing a misconduct charge over an alleged relationship with an inmate at HMP Wandsworth. Stephanie Adair, 29, was arrested on November 1 following claims that she was involved with Jahki Crosdale, an inmate at the south London prison. Adair faces one count of misconduct in public office.
Crosdale, 28, is charged with encouraging the commission of an indictable only offence related to the alleged affair. An investigation into Adair, who worked at HMP Wandsworth as a contractor, began in November 2024. It is understood that allegations of their relationship surfaced after Crosdale included her address on court documents.
Adair appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, where she confirmed her name and address. Her case has been adjourned to Kingston Crown Court on September 29. Crosdale, who is serving his sentence at HMP Manchester, was due to appear but could not due to issues with the video link.
Crosdale has a history of convictions. At 17, he was convicted of the manslaughter of 19-year-old Charlie Burns in March 2015, receiving a six-year sentence for stabbing him to death over a cannabis debt. In 2018, he pleaded guilty to drug supply charges and was jailed for a year after being found with £2,000 worth of class A drugs. He has since been jailed for further firearms and drug offenses.
HMP Wandsworth was described as "England's worst jail" in August 2024 by the Howard League for Penal Reform, which cited high rates of overcrowding, self-harm, violence, and seven self-inflicted deaths in the preceding 12 months. The prison was also the location where a prison officer was filmed in a relationship with an inmate.
