UK Prime Minister: Russia Interfered in Brexit Vote

Prime Minister Andy Burnham of the United Kingdom has stated that it is clear Russia interfered in Britain’s 2016 vote to leave the European Union. Burnham emphasized the importance of documenting Moscow's interference, particularly as countries across Europe confront the same threat.

In excerpts from the podcast “The Rest is Politics” released on Sunday, Burnham said he inquired about Russian interference in the Brexit referendum upon becoming prime minister in July. The full podcast was scheduled for release on Monday. He stated he received a clear answer confirming interference and believes this information helps voters in Germany and France understand that Russia instigates some political activities.

Russia has consistently denied meddling in other countries' elections or referendums.

Burnham's remarks coincide with warnings from U.K. intelligence agencies regarding the escalating threat of Russian interference in Britain’s democratic institutions. This marks what is believed to be the first public acknowledgment by a British prime minister of Russian interference in the Brexit vote.

Burnham also mentioned discussions with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz regarding potential links between Russia and the far-right Alternative for Germany party during a meeting last week in Berlin. Burnham relayed that Merz indicated the AfD party is clearly linked to and possibly funded by Russia, adding that misinformation and disinformation are emanating from Russia into German politics.

A 2020 report by Parliament’s Intelligence and Security Committee found that the government had not fully assessed the potential impact of Russian state-run media and online “troll” accounts on the EU referendum.
