UK Prime Minister Pledges Government Support for Dementia Research in Honor of Late Father
Prime Minister Andy Burnham announces a significant funding partnership and designates dementia research as a national priority, inspired by his father's recent passing.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham has declared dementia research a national priority, pledging "the weight of government" to accelerate the search for a cure. The commitment comes as he unveils a £48 million partnership aimed at advancing treatment development, an effort he states is deeply personal following the recent death of his father, Roy, from Alzheimer's.
In an article written for the Daily Mail, Burnham expressed his determination to make the UK a leading nation in dementia research. He highlighted that his father's battle with the disease revealed systemic failures in care, prompting his personal mission to enact change. "Ever since I was health secretary under the last Labour government, I've wanted to change this," he wrote. "Now I'm Prime Minister, it's a personal mission I'm determined to see through."
The Daily Mail and Alzheimer's Society have partnered for their "Defeating Dementia" campaign, which aims to increase awareness, promote early diagnosis, boost research, and improve care for those affected by the disease, which is Britain's leading cause of death, claiming 76,000 lives annually.
The newly announced £48 million initiative includes £33 million from the government, augmented by contributions from Bristol Myers Squibb, GSK, and Gates Ventures. This funding will bolster the Barbara Alliance, named in memory of actress Barbara Windsor, to expedite the development of dementia treatments by establishing a platform that connects health data, research, and clinical trial capabilities, thereby facilitating participant recruitment.
Speaking ahead of the Innovation Nation Summit in Manchester, Burnham described dementia as a "devastatingly cruel disease" that impacts not only individuals but also their families. He stated his refusal to accept dementia as merely a condition to be managed, expressing hope for a breakthrough and cure. "I want Britain to be the country that makes the breakthrough and delivers the cure for dementia the world has been waiting for," he affirmed.
The investment aligns with plans for a National Care Service, intended to ensure individuals with dementia receive adequate care and support, offering peace of mind to their families. Dementia will also be a key focus for the new Health Data Research Service, which, backed by up to £600 million from the government and the Wellcome Trust, will consolidate NHS and research data to aid scientists in identifying suitable patients for clinical trials.
Scott Mitchell, widower of Dame Barbara Windsor, recalled urging former Prime Minister Boris Johnson to increase funding for dementia research. He noted that this initiative provides a second legacy for his late wife. Alzheimer's Society hailed the move as a "significant moment," with Health Secretary Yvette Cooper adding that it "will help us turn the tide on dementia."
Burnham's father, Roy, passed away last month after living with dementia. He noted that his father's carers were exceptional, but the experience underscored the inadequacies of the current care system for both caregivers and those receiving care. He drew a parallel between cancer treatment within the NHS and the multifaceted burdens—physical, mental, emotional, and financial—faced by individuals with dementia and their families.
Drawing inspiration from the post-World War II creation of the National Health Service, Burnham outlined plans for a new settlement for older people, including a National Care Service offering free personal care and a state pension that increases annually. "This is personal for me," he stated, emphasizing that all individuals deserve dignity as they age. "We can win the fight against dementia. We can transform our care system. And we can bring back hope to Britain."
