UK Prime Minister Defends Pension Changes, Faces Criticism on Care Service Funding

Kemi Badenoch has criticized Andy Burnham's economic proposals as "Corbynism with better packaging," while the Prime Minister defended a plan to adjust the state pension triple lock to fund a new National Care Service (NCS).

Under the proposed changes, set to take effect from 2030, the state pension's annual increase would be tied to the Consumer Price Index or a minimum of 2.5%, deviating from the current triple lock's automatic link with average earnings. The government argues this adjustment will ensure pensioners remain "financially secure" by providing greater stability, despite potentially receiving less than under the existing system. The Prime Minister compared the potential creation of the NCS to the establishment of the National Health Service (NHS) in 1948.

Burnham's proposal aims to generate approximately £15 billion annually by the late 2030s to finance the NCS. However, the Conservative party has labeled the plan as unfunded. This criticism comes as senior figures within the Conservative party, including former Chancellor Sir Jeremy Hunt and shadow foreign secretary Tom Tugendhat, have individually expressed concerns about the long-term sustainability of the current triple lock.

The Conservatives have already committed to reducing the welfare bill by £23 billion as part of a broader government savings initiative totaling £47 billion, with further reforms anticipated.

In parallel, Badenoch announced plans to reform welfare for young people. Under the proposed "Get To Work" scheme, school leavers who are unemployed would be required to participate in intensive job coaching rather than immediately claiming Universal Credit (UC). This program could involve daily attendance at job centers, work experience placements, and interview preparation. Those who do not find or accept work after six months might be moved to a Subsistence Allowance, paid via a card with restrictions on certain purchases.

Badenoch stated that the triple lock remains the current policy and is part of the draft manifesto for the upcoming election. She emphasized a focus on addressing the "root cause" of economic issues by revitalizing the UK's economy.
