UK Population Reaches Record High Amid Slowing Growth
Official figures reveal the UK's population has reached 69.5 million, but growth has decelerated due to decreased net migration and birth rates.
The United Kingdom's population has reached a new peak of approximately 69.5 million, according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS). However, the rate of population growth has significantly slowed, marking the lowest annual increase since 1998, excluding the pandemic-affected year of 2020.
The ONS reported that in mid-2025, the UK's population stood at 69,483,939, an increase of 227,665 from the previous year. This represents a growth rate of 0.33 percent, a considerable decrease from rates seen in recent years, such as 1.05 percent in 2022, 1.34 percent in 2023, and 0.97 percent in 2024.
The primary driver behind this slowdown is a substantial drop in net migration. Net migration in the year to mid-2025 was estimated at 222,900, a steep decline from 651,700 in the preceding twelve months. This reduction is largely attributed to visa restrictions implemented by the previous Conservative government in the spring of 2024.
Birth rates have also contributed to the slower growth. In the year to mid-2025, there were 652,400 births, the lowest number recorded in over four decades. Over the same period, 647,500 deaths were registered. This resulted in a natural population increase (the difference between births and deaths) of only 4,900.
Regional population trends within the UK show divergence. England experienced a small increase, while Wales saw its first population drop in a decade. Scotland and Northern Ireland exhibited minimal population growth.
Revised ONS projections indicate that the UK population is now expected to peak much earlier than previously anticipated. The number of people living in the country is projected to reach a high of 72.5 million in 2054 before beginning to decline, a significant shift from earlier estimates that predicted a peak in 2096. England's population is forecast to peak at just over 62 million in 2056 and subsequently decrease, a departure from prior forecasts of continuous growth for at least another century. Population peaks in Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland have also been brought forward to 2035, 2033, and 2031, respectively.
