UK Police Release Five Men on Bail in Probe Near U.S. Air Base

British police have released on bail five men arrested in connection with a suspected terrorist plot near a key U.S. air base in England. The men, all British nationals aged between 23 and 25 and from London, were arrested on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offenses.

Roadblocks and a cordon remained in place in the village of Whelford, near RAF Fairford, on Tuesday morning as the investigation continued. The arrests occurred early Sunday morning after a tip-off from a local farmer, leading authorities to stop three vans near the air base, which has served as a significant hub for U.S. Air Force operations.

Laurence Taylor, the head of National Counter Terrorism Policing in the U.K., stated that the suspects were bailed under stringent conditions regarding their movement and contact with others. They have not been charged and remain under investigation. Taylor acknowledged the geopolitical context of the incident, noting that investigators are considering all angles, including the possibility of involvement by proxies or individuals acting for a foreign state.

President Donald Trump commented on the arrests, describing them as a successful, long-term operation. He suggested to reporters that the suspects were looking to inflict significant damage on U.S. forces at RAF Fairford and, after their bail, hinted at a potential link to Iran, though he did not provide further details. Trump expressed surprise at the decision to release the men, stating he would not have done so.

The Iranian embassy in London denied any connection to the incident, condemning what it termed "unfounded and malicious speculations" published by some British media. The embassy stated that such fabrications serve only to fuel "Iranophobia propaganda."

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio also indicated that the incident involved a "foreign actor," while cautioning that he could not share all details publicly. He referred to the situation as very serious and emphasized that elements in the world, such as Iran, have openly threatened American interests globally. Rubio assured that there would be repercussions if such threats were carried out or even attempted, and that more information would be forthcoming.
