UK Police Release Boy on Bail in Connection with River Deaths
Three teenagers, identified as college students, died when a car entered the River Wear.
A boy arrested in connection with the deaths of three teenagers in Sunderland has been released on bail. The incident occurred when a car entered the River Wear, resulting in the deaths of Luke Etheridge, 16, Zara Shaw, 16, and Jackson Duke, 17.
Ch Supt Scott Cowie, area commander for Sunderland, expressed the profound grief felt by the community. "The last 24 hours have brought unimaginable agony and heartbreak for the loved ones of Luke, Jackson and Zara," Cowie stated. "All three had their whole futures ahead of them and will be hugely missed." He also acknowledged the impact of the tragedy on the wider community, noting that people have been supporting one another.
Sunderland College confirmed that the three deceased were students at the institution. A statement released on Facebook described the loss as "a heartbreaking loss for our college community, and the wider city of Sunderland."
Emergency services were extensively deployed to the scene along the River Wear. Images from the event show numerous emergency personnel, including water rescue units and police divers, working on the riverbank and in the water. A vehicle, identified as a black Audi A3, was recovered from the river.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the car entering the water is ongoing.
