UK Police Dismantle Major Cocaine Smuggling Ring, Jailing Four for Over 70 Years
Authorities uncovered a plot to import £20 million of cocaine hidden in frozen fish shipments.
The Metropolitan Police have jailed four individuals for a combined total of over 70 years for their roles in a significant drug smuggling operation that planned to import approximately £20 million worth of cocaine into the United Kingdom. The sophisticated scheme involved concealing hundreds of kilograms of cocaine and ketamine within shipments of frozen fish originating from South America.
The investigation, aided by intelligence gleaned from the now-defunct encrypted communication platform EncroChat, revealed an intricate plot orchestrated by the gang. Their most ambitious plan involved importing 600 kilograms of cocaine, with an estimated street value exceeding £20 million. This shipment was intended to be smuggled through a legitimate fish business located in London's Billingsgate Market.
The key figures identified in the organized crime group were Samuel Tokeley, 57, who was sentenced to 22 years for his leadership role and coordination of drug importation; Scott Richards, 51, jailed for 14 and a half years for conspiracy to import Class A drugs; Scott Unwin, 52, who received a 13-year sentence; and Nicholas Shilling, 63, from Dubai, who was also sentenced to 22 years.
Detectives from the Met launched their investigation after receiving intelligence from the National Crime Agency (NCA), which had gained access to EncroChat data. The analysis of encrypted messages uncovered discussions related to payments, shipping logistics, and the sourcing of cocaine from contacts in Ecuador. However, the planned fish-smuggling operation was ultimately thwarted before it could be executed.
Detective Chief Inspector Dean Grafton highlighted the industrial scale of the operation and the criminals' attempts to conceal their activities within legitimate commerce. "The defendants believed that encrypted communication platforms would protect them as they discussed vast quantities of drugs, laundering criminal profits and exploiting legitimate businesses to facilitate their offending," Grafton stated. He commended the meticulous analysis of EncroChat data and the collaboration with international law enforcement partners.
Samuel Tokeley, who was residing in Alicante, Spain, was arrested in the summer of 2023 by Spanish National Police, supported by the NCA and Met Police, under extradition warrants. Nicholas Shilling was apprehended in Ibiza under similar circumstances. Dramatic footage captured the arrests of Scott Richards and Scott Unwin at their respective addresses in Colchester and Dagenham, where police recovered cash and mobile devices linked to drug trafficking.
Tokeley pleaded guilty to conspiracy to import Class A drugs at Woolwich Crown Court. Richards, Unwin, and Shilling were convicted by a jury following a trial that concluded in May.
