UK Police Arrest Suspects Near U.S. Airbase in England
Explosive ordnance disposal teams were called to examine vehicles following the arrests near RAF Fairford, a key site for U.S. Air Force operations.
Gloucestershire Police in the United Kingdom arrested multiple individuals on suspicion of offenses under the Explosives Act on Sunday, near RAF Fairford, a U.S. airbase located approximately two miles from the village of Whelford. The base hosts U.S. Air Force assets and has recently been utilized in operations related to the conflict in Iran.
As a result of the arrests, police declared a major incident, leading to the evacuation of several properties in the Whelford area. The Army's specialist explosive ordnance disposal team was deployed to examine a number of vehicles.
Authorities have not released the identities or the exact number of suspects arrested. The U.K. Ministry of Defence stated that the Prime Minister is being kept informed of the situation. A spokesperson for the ministry expressed gratitude to the emergency services for their swift action in detaining the suspects and implementing measures to ensure community safety, adding that further comment would be inappropriate while investigations are ongoing.
This incident follows a period of heightened concern regarding cyber activity linked to Iran. In the preceding month, Iran-linked hackers were suspected of taking a small British power generator offline for several days. This occurred weeks after a cyberattack targeted more than 30 community water systems in Minnesota, where federal agencies have warned that Iranian-affiliated actors have been attempting to gain access to industrial control systems in the water, energy, and government sectors across the United States, leading to operational disruptions and financial losses.
