UK Police Arrest Several Near US Air Base Amid 'Major Incident'
Authorities declared a major incident and evacuated properties in the Whelford area after arrests were made under the explosives act.
British police arrested several individuals on suspicion of offenses under the explosives act near RAF Fairford, a key U.S. air base in southwest England, authorities announced Sunday.
Gloucestershire Police declared a major incident and stated that a number of properties in the Whelford area were being evacuated following the arrests. The Army's specialist explosive ordnance disposal team was on site examining vehicles. Police reported that they believed the incident was contained and were working with partners to enact pre-existing plans.
RAF Fairford is located approximately two miles from Whelford. The base has served as a significant hub for U.S. operations, including the deployment of heavy bombers such as the B-1 Lancer and B-52 Stratofortress, particularly since February. Residents evacuated from the area were directed to a nearby recreation center, and a cordon was established around the site.
