UK Police Arrest Dual National in Suspected Terror Plot Near US Air Base

British police have arrested a dual UK-Iranian national in London on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts as part of an investigation into a suspected plot targeting RAF Fairford, an air base used by the U.S. military.

The arrest on Thursday followed the apprehension of five British men, all in their 20s, on Sunday near the Gloucestershire airbase on suspicion of terrorism and explosive offenses. These five men were later released without charge on police bail.

Counter-terrorism police stated they are examining all potential angles, including the possibility of foreign state involvement in the incident. Prime Minister Andy Burnham indicated on Wednesday that the plot might have had Iranian connections.

"The investigation into circumstances surrounding events in Gloucestershire is hugely complex, and our specialist teams are interrogating multiple lines of enquiry," said Vicki Evans, Britain’s Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, in a statement. "As we’ve made clear, we’re looking at all possible angles – including possible foreign state involvement."

A 27-year-old dual national was arrested in London, and a second British man, aged 26, has been questioned under caution, according to police.

The incident prompted a significant police response and raised concerns among Western allies. RAF Fairford is a key site for U.S. Air Force B-52 bomber operations.
