UK Police Arrest 17 in Major Organized Crime Bust

The Metropolitan Police, in collaboration with Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), arrested 17 individuals on Tuesday morning following a large-scale operation. More than 800 officers executed dawn raids at 24 properties across London, Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and Suffolk.

The operation targeted a suspected organized crime group and is the result of many months of intensive investigation, according to a spokesperson for the Met Police. Officers from HMRC and the FCA are supporting ongoing searches at the raided addresses.

During the operation, one officer sustained a non-life-changing stab wound to the leg while executing a warrant in Cockfosters. The officer received on-scene treatment from colleagues and paramedics before being transported to a hospital.

The arrested individuals range in age from 26 to 65. Suspicions include involvement in an organized crime group, money laundering, tax evasion, conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm (GBH), and false accounting. The youngest arrested, a 26-year-old man, is suspected of participating in organized crime, money laundering, tax evasion, and false accounting. The oldest, a 65-year-old man, faces similar charges along with conspiracy to commit GBH.

In addition to the arrests, the FCA disrupted seven firms as part of the wider operation and is pursuing action against an additional 30 firms. Authorities stated that organized crime has a broad impact, extending beyond those at the highest levels and affecting communities through violence and exploitation.

Met Police leadership emphasized the complexity of investigating such groups, requiring significant investment and expertise from police and partner agencies. They expressed a commitment to dismantling these organizations and preventing them from operating freely in London.

A spokesperson for the FCA highlighted the importance of partnerships in tackling financial crime and pledged continued collaboration to identify and disrupt groups exploiting the financial system for illicit purposes. An HMRC representative echoed these sentiments, stressing the value of inter-agency cooperation in combating serious and organized crime, including suspected money laundering.
