UK Pensioners Eyeing European Retirement Amidst Rising Costs
Expert identifies Spain, Portugal, Bulgaria, and Greece as affordable destinations for British retirees.
British pensioners considering retirement abroad are increasingly looking to continental Europe for sunnier climes and a lower cost of living, according to property expert Jonny Christie.
Christie, co-founder of The Property Buying Company, has identified four European countries where the money of British retirees can extend further, offering a more relaxed lifestyle and affordable property.
Spain remains a popular choice, with Christie noting its established British expat community, good infrastructure, and healthcare. He highlighted regions like Murcia, Alicante, and Almería as offering particularly good value. Properties in Murcia, for example, can be found for around £130,000, significantly less than the UK's average house price. The overall cost of living in Spain is approximately 26.4% lower than in the UK.
Portugal is another favored destination. While costs have risen in popular areas like Lisbon and the Algarve, Christie advises retirees to look towards smaller cities, inland regions, and less tourist-heavy locations to maximize their pension. In the town of Lousã, houses average around €190,000 (£160,000). The cost of living in Portugal is about 30.4% cheaper than in the UK.
Bulgaria is presented as an often-overlooked option, offering affordability and beautiful landscapes. The cost of living in Bulgaria is approximately 66.7% lower than in the UK. Christie notes that property and rental costs make it worthy of consideration. A couple reportedly purchased an abandoned home in Popovo for £8,000, with renovation costs estimated between £15,000 and £20,000. However, he cautions that Bulgaria may lack the established retirement infrastructure found in Spain or Portugal.
Greece also offers good value, particularly outside of Athens and the most popular islands. The cost of living in Greece is about 30.7% lower than in the UK. Christie suggests that mainland Greece and less tourist-driven islands can provide a significantly lower entry point for property purchases, which can be crucial for those retiring on a fixed income.
Christie advises potential retirees to research specific locations within countries, as property prices and living costs can vary significantly, and not to base decisions solely on national averages.
