A Member of Parliament has decried a three-day internet and phone line outage affecting approximately 3,000 customers in Maghull, Merseyside, as "disgraceful." Bill Esterson, Labour MP for Sefton Central, stated that the provider's response to the disruption, which began Thursday afternoon, is insufficient.

"It is really serious to be without the internet in modern society," Esterson said, contrasting the extended outage with typical repair times that usually resolve issues within hours. "Normally these problems get fixed within a few hours not days."

The blackout was reportedly caused by contractors performing sewer excavation work on Hall Lane. Openreach, the broadband provider, confirmed that the work resulted in "significant damage" to its underground network. The company indicated that services were expected to be restored by early Saturday evening, assuming no further complications arise.

The prolonged loss of connectivity has caused significant disruption for local businesses. Joy Sinnott, an employee at Meadows Pharmacy on Liverpool Road South, described the situation as "chaos." The pharmacy has been operating without a landline, with only one functioning computer, and unable to process card payments.

"It is crazy just how much everything depends on the internet," Sinnott commented, highlighting the reliance on digital infrastructure for daily operations.
