UK Mothers' Support Group Secures Vital Funding to Continue In-Person Services
The Happy Mums Foundation receives £70,000 in grants, averting the closure of its postpartum mental health wellbeing groups.
The Happy Mums Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting women with postpartum mental health challenges, has secured £70,000 in grants, ensuring the continuation of its in-person wellbeing groups. The funding, awarded by the Postcode Lottery and the National Lottery, alleviates immediate financial pressures that had threatened to force the organization to move its services online.
Founded in 2015, the Happy Mums Foundation has supported over 1,000 families in Cumbria. Earlier this year, the organization announced it was at risk of closure due to funding challenges. Director Lucinda Bray had previously expressed concerns that transitioning to online-only support could negatively impact vulnerable women, emphasizing the importance of safe, in-person spaces for discussion.
"If that doesn't have an outlet and you don't have a safe space to talk about those things, where might they go?" Bray stated, highlighting that open discussions about mental health, including suicidal thoughts, can serve as a crucial preventative measure.
The grants include £50,000 from the Postcode Lottery and £20,000 from the National Lottery. Bray described her reaction as "absolutely thrilled," adding that the funding allows the foundation to maintain its current groups and focus on long-term sustainability. The organization aims to continue providing essential support to mothers experiencing postpartum mental health issues.
