UK Ministry of Defence Eyes Space Weapons by 2035

The United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence is planning to deploy weapons into space by 2035 as part of a significant investment in its defense capabilities. This initiative, aiming to make Britain a "competitive space power," includes the development of jamming devices and lasers specifically designed for the space environment.

The move comes amidst a global escalation in the race for military control of space, which is increasingly viewed as a critical domain for future conflicts. The UK's Space Strategy acknowledges that adversaries are seeking to "disrupt, degrade and deny" the use of space-based services, which are vital to national security and economic prosperity. The strategy highlights that global space and satellite services contribute approximately 18 percent of the UK's GDP.

The United States has already acknowledged deploying weapons into space to counter threats from Russia and China. US officials have stated that military hardware is being positioned in space to guard against hostile actions. This development has been underscored by intelligence suggesting Russia has used its spy satellites to assist Iran in its conflict with the United States. Analysis indicated that Russian spacecraft provided Iran with intelligence on US military hardware and troop locations prior to an attack on a Saudi Arabian air base, resulting in casualties.

The worldwide space economy is estimated to be worth nearly £500 billion, and the UK Ministry of Defence is collaborating with allies to address the growing threats in this domain. The planned investment totals £7.8 billion, signaling a substantial commitment to enhancing the UK's position in space warfare.
