UK Minister Suggests Boycotting Commonwealth Summits Over Reparations Demands

Kemi Badenoch, a prominent Conservative leader, has suggested that Britain should consider boycotting Commonwealth summits if these meetings primarily consist of demands for financial reparations. Her remarks, posted on X, serve as a sharp rebuke to any notion of the UK apologizing for its historical role in the slave trade.

Badenoch questioned the basis of such demands, asking if Caribbean nations would also seek apologies from the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers, and merchants who participated in the slave trade. She emphasized that current British taxpayers should not be held financially responsible for actions taken by previous generations.

"If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash, then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort," Badenoch stated. Her post has garnered significant attention online.

Badenoch's comments come amidst a period of increased popularity. A recent poll by The i newspaper placed her as the UK's most popular leader, ahead of the Prime Minister and Nigel Farage. Additionally, Politico's "poll of polls" indicates the Conservative party is in second place, surpassing Reform for the first time since December 2024.
