UK Minister Admits Inability to Stop All Migrant Boats Amid Border Fury

A British government minister has acknowledged the inability to intercept every migrant boat crossing the English Channel, a statement that comes amid intense criticism over recent unhindered landings in Kent. Education Secretary Lucy Powell stated that "(You) can't stop everything all of the time," during an interview on BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

Her comments followed an incident where 21 individuals were detained after a boat evaded Border Force patrols and landed at Samphire Hoe, near Dover. This marked the second such landing in two days, with a group of seven having previously reached Folkestone on Monday morning, representing the first undetected landing in approximately a year.

These incidents have intensified the political debate surrounding Channel crossings. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has initiated an urgent review into the matter, conceding that even a single uncontrolled landing is unacceptable. However, she also suggested that new tactics employed by smugglers indicate that government efforts are having an impact.

Conservative shadow home secretary Chris Philp criticized the government's border security, describing it as having descended into "chaos." He argued that the recent landings demonstrate a failure by French authorities to adequately intercept boats in French waters and expressed concern that the government is unaware of who is entering the country. Philp asserted that the only effective solution is the deportation of those arriving illegally.

Powell, while acknowledging the concerns, framed the overall situation as an improving one, attributing this to the ongoing efforts of border forces, security services, police, and international partnerships. She characterized the task as "mammoth and huge" but one that is beginning to show results, while emphasizing the need to address any remaining issues.

Before the recent landings, no small boat arrivals to the UK coast without an escort had been officially recorded since September 6, 2025. This had been presented as a success attributed to new surveillance technology and enhanced resources by the Border Security Command.

In a related development, French authorities reported the discovery of a man, believed to be a migrant, deceased on a beach in northern France. The discovery was made hours after a small boat departed for the UK, with other migrants reportedly waiting in nearby dunes.

According to available figures, 17,784 migrants have arrived in the UK by crossing the Channel in small boats so far this year. Of these, 5,315 arrivals have occurred since Andy Burnham became Prime Minister. The total number of arrivals for the current year is reportedly down 45 percent compared to the same period last year.
