Daniel Dickons, 39, pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm for the unprovoked attack that occurred on August 5 last year. He was handed a 52-week jail term, suspended for 24 months, at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.
The sentence includes a six-month alcohol treatment requirement and 35 rehabilitation days. Dickons was also ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation to the victim.
Prosecutor Lauren McConnell stated that the woman was cycling along Culver Parade on the Isle of Wight when Dickons pushed her off her bike. She fell approximately five to six feet onto the beach below, with her bicycle landing on top of her. The victim was taken to the hospital and discharged the same night.
She sustained several injuries, including a gash to her chin, a neck injury, a black eye, and an exposed kneecap. The court heard that the woman has since suffered psychological harm and experiences nightmares multiple times a week.
Dickons, from the Isle of Wight, was apprehended at the scene by a member of the public before police arrested him. He told officers he pushed the woman because he "thought it would be funny, so he did it." The court heard the assault was unprovoked and occurred "for no reason."
Dickons has six previous convictions for six offenses dating back to 2008. His defense counsel, Oscar Vincent, noted that Dickons had no prior offenses in the 13 years leading up to this incident and had made a full admission to police, expressing immediate remorse.
