A man obsessed with the Hannibal Lecter films has been sentenced to over 21 years in prison for the murder and dismemberment of his neighbor. Karl Hutchings, 48, bludgeoned Julie Buckley, 55, with a hammer before dismembering her body into ten pieces and burying her remains in a shallow grave.
During sentencing at Cambridge Crown Court, prosecutor Christine Agnew KC told the court that Hutchings confessed he was obsessed with Hannibal Lecter and could recite lines from the films verbatim. He also reportedly told a friend he had considered eating Ms. Buckley, stating he would have had a "steak dinner" if he hadn't considered her a "toxic person" to ingest.
Hutchings pleaded guilty to murder after initially claiming diminished responsibility due to mental health issues. His defense attorney stated he had a history of mental health problems and drug addiction. The court heard that Hutchings had been discharged from a mental health facility in August 2024.
The attack reportedly stemmed from an argument over drugs. Ms. Agnew stated that Ms. Buckley refused to take Hutchings to get his prescription and was taunting him by taking drugs in front of him without sharing.
Following the murder, Hutchings sold Ms. Buckley's car for £500 and used her bank card to withdraw cash and purchase alcohol. Police began investigating in mid-February of the previous year when concerns were raised for Ms. Buckley's welfare. Officers found blood evidence at the house where she was staying, which was forensically linked to her.
Ms. Buckley was last seen alive on January 28, captured on CCTV buying groceries. Hutchings was arrested on February 13, and despite it being a "no body" case, he eventually provided detectives with a map of the burial site in September, the day after he admitted to the killing. A shallow grave, dug with hand tools, was found containing Ms. Buckley's remains. A post-mortem examination revealed multiple blunt force injuries to her skull and fractures to her ribs, nose, and left hand, indicating she likely suffered for hours before death.
Recorder Mark Bishop described Hutchings' actions as an "eruption of violence" and noted that he aggravated the crime by treating Ms. Buckley's body with "no dignity or respect in death," stripping her naked and dismembering her with a saw.
Hutchings displayed no emotion during the sentencing. His Facebook page included a photo of himself wearing a mask similar to the one worn by Hannibal Lecter, played by Sir Anthony Hopkins, in the iconic film.
DCI Stott expressed satisfaction that Hutchings had taken responsibility, acknowledging that while it would not alleviate the family's pain, it would make the legal process easier for them.
