Ahead of the opening of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, the leaders of the UK, Scottish, and Welsh governments convened for separate meetings to discuss intergovernmental relations and pressing economic issues. Scottish First Minister John Swinney met with UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham on Thursday afternoon.

During their discussion, Rhun ap Iorwerth, representing the Welsh government, expressed satisfaction with his meeting with the prime minister, congratulating Burnham on his new role. Ap Iorwerth stated his desire to begin a new chapter in the relationship between their respective governments, emphasizing mutual respect and a shared commitment to public service. He outlined his belief in the power of devolution and advocated for Wales to have parity of powers with Scotland. This includes a new Wales Bill focused on devolving policing and justice, along with a revised funding model to replace the Barnett formula.

The leaders also addressed the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, agreeing on the need for a more collaborative approach to politics. Ap Iorwerth conveyed his anticipation for further productive discussions to advance fairness and equality for Wales and its communities.

These meetings underscore a period of renewed focus on intergovernmental cooperation and devolved powers as national leaders gather for the major international sporting event.
