UK Inflation Hits Nearly Year-High Amid Iran War Fuel Price Surge
Consumer prices in the United Kingdom rose to 3.5% in September, driven by soaring fuel costs linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, prompting expectations of an interest rate hike by the Bank of England.
Inflation in the United Kingdom reached its highest rate in nearly a year as the conflict in Iran continued to drive up fuel prices, according to official figures released Wednesday. The Office for National Statistics reported that consumer prices increased by 3.5% in the year to September, a rise from 3.1% in August and exceeding the 3.4% forecast by most economists.
This marks the highest inflation reading since October of the previous year and pushes the rate further above the Bank of England's target of 2%.
Fuel Costs Drive Inflation
The transportation sector was the primary contributor to the inflation surge. Motor fuel prices, in particular, saw a significant increase, soaring by 30% in the year to September, up from a 23% annual rise in August.
These escalating fuel costs are attributed to the Iran war and the subsequent disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which have impacted global oil and gas supplies.
Interest Rate Expectations
Economists anticipate that the Bank of England will raise interest rates at its next meeting on November 5. Last month, the central bank maintained its main rate at 3.75% but signaled a readiness to increase it soon. The current inflation figures solidify these expectations.
"With inflation increasing, the pieces are falling firmly into place for a November rate rise," said Suren Thiru, chief economist at ICAEW. Most economists predict an increase in the bank's main rate to 4%.
Other central banks, including the U.S. Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank, have also recently raised their interest rates. U.K. interest rates had been on a downward trend from a 15-year high of 5.25% before the conflict escalated.
Treasury chief John Healey stated that his upcoming budget address would aim to provide relief to businesses and families facing the rising cost of living.
