UK Imposes Visa Restrictions on Eritrea Over Deportation Stance

The United Kingdom has imposed visa restrictions on Eritrea, targeting diplomats and VIPs with a crackdown on fast-track access to the UK's visa system. The move by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood aims to pressure Eritrea into accepting the return of its nationals who have entered the UK illegally.

Nearly 5,900 Eritreans crossed the English Channel in small boats in the year ending June, making the nation a significant source of migrants. Mahmood stated that Eritrea has been given ample opportunity to cooperate on deportations and has refused, unlike other countries.

"My message to the Eritrean government is simple: take back your nationals or face a complete ban on your citizens entering the UK," Mahmood said. "I will not hesitate to impose further measures on other countries refusing to co-operate."

In addition to the visa system changes, Eritrean diplomats are now restricted to traveling no more than 37 miles from London without Foreign Office permission. This tit-for-tat measure mirrors restrictions previously placed on British officials in Eritrea.

The Home Office indicated that Eritrea "abruptly withdrew returns co-operation" earlier this year. The decision to implement visa penalties, utilizing powers introduced under the previous Conservative government, comes as small boat arrivals from Eritrea appear to have increased. The number of Eritrean Channel crossings rose from 2,000 in 2022 to 7,600 in 2025, with data for the year ending June showing 5,875 arrivals.

The article highlights a case where an Eritrean national, Radiet Meles, who arrived in the UK in 2015, was jailed for rape and assault by beating after being released from prison for a previous sex crime. Meles had been identified for deportation after his initial sentence for attempted rape in 2018, but was not monitored upon release and committed another offense.

Previous instances of similar visa restrictions have seen countries like Angola and Namibia agree to enhanced returns arrangements with the UK. The Democratic Republic of Congo also faced restrictions before capitulating, leading to the resumption of return flights and the lifting of penalties.
