As colder weather approaches, households in the UK are facing significant concerns over the rising cost of heating oil, with potential financial hardship looming for many.

"It's like hundreds of pounds that people have got to find," said a Liberal Democrat councillor, highlighting the unexpected financial burden. "To fill up a tank with oil, it might be like £500 more that they've got to find that they weren't expecting."

The surge in heating oil and fuel costs is partly attributed to the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, exacerbating affordability issues for essential home heating.

Local authorities are directing those facing financial difficulties to available support funds. In Devon, the Crisis and Resilience Fund is accessible through local district councils. This fund is designed to assist low-income households experiencing sudden financial shocks, such as unexpected bills, a reduction in income, or struggles to cover the costs of necessities like food, energy, water, housing, or heating oil.

The warning underscores the precarious financial situation many families may find themselves in as they prepare for the winter months, with the added expense of heating oil creating a substantial new worry.
