UK Home Secretary Faces Lobbying for Migrant Worker Visas from Colleagues

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has disclosed that fellow Labour ministers regularly lobby her office for increased work visas, stating these requests occur "at least once every week or two."

Mahmood expressed frustration with what she described as the "sheer number" of pleas from colleagues in other government departments seeking work visas for foreign employees. She criticized the practice of relying on imported overseas staff to fill vacancies, particularly when nearly a million young people in the country are not engaged in employment or education.

In an interview on The Rest is Politics podcast, Mahmood highlighted that the Labour Party, with its emphasis on workers' rights, should be attentive to the potential exploitation of foreign workers who may face low pay and poor living conditions. She suggested that these foreign workers are often recruited because they are cheaper, leading to potentially abusive working conditions, citing the care sector as an example.

Mahmood also indicated a desire to expand safe and legal routes for refugees, referencing her earlier announcement at Labour conference to establish four new schemes, including a resettlement program for Afghans and Palestinians. She stated the importance of helping these individuals integrate into the country.

Regarding cross-Channel migration, the Home Secretary asserted that there is no simple mechanism to compel France to accept back every migrant arriving in small boats. She explained that such efforts can be reciprocated, highlighting the complex nature of international relations.

Separately, Mahmood commented on activism, stating her discomfort with arrests related to Palestine Action protests. She defended a ban on these activists, while also suggesting that police should intervene against individuals demonstrating outside mosques if they support proscribed neo-Nazi groups.

Responding to Mahmood's remarks, Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp criticized Labour, stating that "Every Labour MP wants more visas and more open borders, even though low-skilled mass immigration has clearly failed." He added that "Labour are handing out hundreds of thousands of work permits while millions of Brits sit on benefits. We should employ UK nationals before we bring in foreign labour."
