The United Kingdom is experiencing its third heatwave of the year, which is forecast to spread further north and west, with temperatures expected to climb into the low to mid-30s Celsius by Friday. An area of high pressure shifting northward will bring the heat to southern Wales and the Midlands. Simultaneously, an easterly breeze will slightly moderate temperatures in eastern areas.
Northern Ireland and Scotland can anticipate highs in the mid-20s Celsius by Friday. Amber heat health alerts remain active across the Midlands, eastern, and southern England until July 12. Yellow heat health alerts are in place for northern England during the same period. These alerts signify potential impacts on health and social care services, including an anticipated rise in mortality, particularly among individuals aged 65 and over or those with pre-existing health conditions.
The National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC) has warned of an increased risk of wildfires due to the dry and hot weather conditions. The NFCC advises against the use of disposable barbecues in open countryside, parks, and moorlands.
This current heatwave is noted as one of the longest-lasting since 1976.
