Thousands of homes in east London and Essex are experiencing a prolonged water outage, now in its sixth day, amid a blistering heatwave. Among those affected are television personalities Georgia Harrison of "Love Island" and Pui Man, a contestant on "The Great British Bake Off." The disruption has left approximately 10,000 households without running water, forcing residents to rely on bottled supplies and water distribution stations.
Thames Water, the utility provider, has cited multiple burst pipes as the cause of the ongoing issues, stating that service restoration was not expected before the following day. The outages coincide with a severe heatwave, where temperatures in London reached 32C (90F) and were projected to climb as high as 38C (100F). Supermarkets have seen their bottled water stock depleted, and Thames Water has established distribution points to aid affected residents.
Those without water have been unable to perform basic functions such as flushing toilets or washing. Pui Man, a bridal designer from Essex, documented the sixth day of the outage on Instagram, showcasing her extensive collection of bottled water. Georgia Harrison, from Redbridge, shared a lighthearted video of herself collecting multipacks of water, humorously captioning it about the daily realities of the situation.
Residents have expressed frustration over the irony of water loss due to burst pipes during a period of drought and a hosepipe ban in the region. Dr. Faiza Shaheen, a former local councillor, voiced her outrage, highlighting the prolonged inconvenience for residents in areas like Woodford and Redbridge. She also pointed to additional disruptions caused by road closures due to burst pipes, which have led to traffic diversions.
Ms. Man described the situation as "terrible," noting the inability to cook or use toilets and the significant distance to water distribution centers. Reports indicate that elderly and vulnerable neighbors have been left entirely without water, with some individuals, like garden landscaper Nick Gaines, volunteering to deliver water to those in need.
Thames Water has stated it is providing bottled water to customers registered on its priority services register and has opened several water stations in locations such as Ilford and Chigwell. Footage shared by Redbridge Council showed a significant leak from a burst water main on Wanstead Lane, creating a large pool of standing water on the street.
The utility company reported that repairs were underway, with three sets of repairs completed and a fourth, involving a three-meter leak, requiring extensive excavation. Fourteen postcodes have been affected by the outages. Thames Water has indicated progress in repairs and aims to restore supply to all customers by Friday, with many expected to have water sooner as the network recovers. Engineers and tankers are reportedly working overnight to expedite the restoration process. Wes Streeting, MP for Ilford North, confirmed he is in contact with Thames Water to push for urgent repairs and updates for his constituents.
