UK Hair Stylist Offers Free Cuts to Support Those Affected by Cost of Living Crisis
Georgia Chappels' Community Haircuts project provides no-cost services, aiming to inspire similar initiatives nationwide.
A hair stylist in Ringwood, England, is offering free haircuts to those struggling with the rising cost of living, hoping to inspire a national movement of stylists donating their time.
Georgia Chappels, founder of the Community Haircuts project, started the initiative after experiencing financial difficulties herself following a divorce, which led her to rely on food banks and charities. Now, she provides a free, drop-in service with no questions asked.
"I can't give back monetary value into the community, but I can give back my time," Chappels stated.
For the past year, Chappels and other volunteer stylists have been holding events at various locations across Hampshire and Dorset. She believes the service is crucial as many families are forced to make difficult financial decisions.
"People are making ends meet," she explained. "The mum might work two jobs, the dad works full time. Yes, they've got a mortgage. Yes, they've got a car. But the bills and everything after everything's gone - there's no money for luxuries such as a haircut."
The service is open to everyone, including students and elderly individuals, not just parents and children.
Thomas Perriman, a barber who recently began his career, has also dedicated his time to the project. "It's so important to give back when you've maybe gone through stuff yourself," Perriman said. "Everyone in the community deserves to get their hair cut in an environment which, for whatever reason, they might not be able to get to normally."
Chappels continues to work in a salon four days a week while managing the Community Haircut events. The team strives to make the experience feel as luxurious as possible, despite not having salon facilities or products.
Events are promoted on the project's Facebook page. Chappels hopes to inspire other hair stylists nationwide to offer similar services, emphasizing the profound impact a haircut can have.
"I would love to inspire other hairdressers up and down the country to maybe roll it out in their local community," she said. "It takes a couple of hours a month. The difference a haircut can make is it makes you feel like you again. It's more than just a haircut."
