UK Government Urges Public to Prepare for National Crisis, Sparking Prepping Trend

The UK government has advised its citizens to prepare for national crises by stockpiling three days of food and water and carrying cash, a directive that has resonated with a growing number of middle-class women who have already embraced the "prepper" lifestyle. These individuals are building resilience in anticipation of potential disasters, ranging from natural catastrophes to broader geopolitical events.

The trend has seen a surge in interest, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic, with women, many of whom are professionals and mothers, taking proactive steps to secure their families' needs. Ana, a 41-year-old mother from Wales, intensified her preparations during COVID-19 lockdowns when she struggled to find baby formula. She now maintains a pantry stocked with enough non-perishables like flour, oats, lentils, beans, and tinned goods to feed her family for at least two months, alongside essential medical and cleaning supplies.

Ana believes the government's three-day recommendation is insufficient, advocating for a two-week supply. "Having enough food to protect your family during a disruption isn’t selfish," she stated, differentiating sensible reserve-building from panic buying. She emphasized that prepping is not about preparing for an apocalypse or zombie invasion, but rather for common disruptions such as economic pressures, price spikes, supply chain issues, storms, or power outages.

Dr. Sarita Robinson, an associate dean at the University of Lancashire, echoed the sentiment that preparedness should not fuel anxiety. "If more households can look after themselves during an emergency, that could leave more support available for those who genuinely need it," she explained. Robinson, who began prepping after experiencing an earthquake in Los Angeles in 2004, noted that the pandemic made her previously adopted practices seem less extreme to friends and family. She observes that more people are taking preparedness seriously, with requests for emergency "go bags" even becoming holiday gifts.

Robinson suggests that widespread preparedness could alleviate pressure on governmental resources, allowing them to focus on more vulnerable populations. "The best time to prepare for an emergency is before it starts! During an emergency it's too late," she cautioned. Her own preparations include a three-month supply of food, which she rotates by using and replacing items regularly, rather than letting them sit unused. She also keeps over-the-counter medicines, water purification tablets, a wind-up radio, and power banks, emphasizing the importance of having comfort items like tea and biscuits.

Both Ana and Robinson highlight that preparedness is not exclusive to those with significant financial resources. Ana promotes learning essential skills, creating family emergency plans, and coordinating with neighbors as valuable, cost-free preparedness measures. She also advocates for practical steps such as having a manual tin opener, torches, batteries, a radio, medication, first aid supplies, and cash. A crucial element, according to Ana, is developing a household plan addressing how to manage food, warmth, and hygiene if essential services fail.

Robinson, who does not have a bunker but is open to the idea, also emphasizes that stockpiling involves purchasing everyday items in slightly larger quantities, which can be more economical in the long run. She advises on having a supply of common foods, including ready-to-eat meals, tinned goods, dried staples, and items catering to children's preferences and dietary needs. Water storage, hygiene supplies, power and lighting solutions, warmth and safety items, and a comprehensive medical kit are also key components of their preparedness strategies.
