UK Government to Provide £100 Energy Payment to Millions Starting in January

Millions of households in the United Kingdom will begin receiving a £100 energy payment from the government starting in January. The funds are intended to assist residents with increasing energy expenses.

The payment will be deposited directly into the bank account used for council tax payments. This streamlined process is designed to ensure a swift and efficient distribution of the funds to eligible recipients.

However, the scheme has specific considerations for students. Those living in student halls will not receive the payment directly because these accommodations are typically not assigned council tax bands A to D. Conversely, students residing in private homes or flats that fall within council tax bands A to D are eligible for the payment.

For students who do not pay council tax directly, or for individuals who are exempt from council tax for other reasons, local authorities will be responsible for distributing the payment. The government has stated that it will provide guidance to local councils on the appropriate methods for disbursing these funds to individuals who do not pay council tax through standard means, such as direct bank transfer linked to council tax accounts. This also applies to individuals who pay their council tax via cash or alternative methods.

The government plans to issue further details regarding the process for local authorities to manage these payments in due course.
