UK Government Plans 1,000 Family Hubs for Infant Support

The UK government is set to establish up to 1,000 'one-stop shops' for infant care across England by 2028, aiming to provide enhanced support for parents and young children. These family hubs will offer comprehensive services, including assistance with infant feeding, mental health support for parents, and programs designed to foster bonding between parents and their babies.

The initiative, announced at the Labour conference in Liverpool, is envisioned as a revival and expansion of services akin to the Sure Start program. Launched by the Labour government in 1998, Sure Start initially targeted disadvantaged areas before growing into a national network of children's centers. It integrated early education, childcare, health services, and family support for children under five, and has been credited with positive impacts on academic success and health outcomes.

Health Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the new program will bring back essential health services, specifically mentioning mental health support for parents and feeding and bonding assistance for newborns, into every family center. The plan seeks to re-establish the comprehensive support system that was in place during the Sure Start era, which saw significant reductions in funding and scope after 2010. The goal is to reach approximately 1,000 hubs within the next two years, restoring a vital resource for families throughout the country.
