The primary structure of Matford Brook Academy, a new school near Exeter that opened in 2023, is slated for demolition and reconstruction by the U.K. government. The Department for Education (DfE) has determined that the building cannot be repaired to meet required standards. This decision marks the latest development in a costly construction issue that has prevented any students from occupying the main building since its completion.

Pupils at the all-through school will continue their education in temporary buildings until at least 2028. The DfE confirmed that contractor Kier's investigation revealed significant structural and compliance issues requiring extensive redesign, making replacement the most viable solution. The department stated its commitment to delivering a high-quality, modern school and is initiating plans to appoint a new contractor.

The school, situated within a large housing development between Exminster and Alphington, began construction in 2021. By 2023, substantial construction problems, including foundation issues, became evident. The initial cohort of students had to attend classes at a different school, and it was reported that the new building lacked structural bolts. Further delays were caused by the collapse of the primary contractor, ISG, in 2024.

No pupil has ever set foot inside the main building due to structural problems and pupils at the all-through school will continue to have lessons in temporary buildings until at least 2028

Devon County Councillor Alan Connett expressed bewilderment over the demolition of a new, unused school, questioning the contract's management and oversight. He welcomed the announcement of a way forward and commended the quality of education and temporary facilities. The school administration assured parents that daily education for current and new students will remain unaffected and expressed optimism about the path towards a new facility, despite the disappointment.

The DfE plans to work closely with the Ted Wragg Trust and the school to minimize disruption throughout the rebuilding process. Further details regarding the timeline are expected once confirmed.
