UK Government Issues Final Funding Offer to Northern Ireland Executive

Northern Ireland Secretary Chris Bryant has presented a final funding offer of £1.5 billion to the Northern Ireland Executive, setting a deadline of next Thursday noon for executive parties to agree on a budget for the current and next two fiscal years. Bryant emphasized the tight financial situation within the UK government, stating there is "no more money" available.

Speaking to BBC Newsline, Bryant indicated that while he prefers to avoid legislating for a budget in Westminster, he must "look at every eventuality" if the executive cannot reach an agreement. He stressed the importance of the executive finding efficiencies and raising additional revenue, though he clarified it is not his role to dictate how they achieve this. He also mentioned that he has not specifically discussed water charges with executive parties.

The UK government's offer includes an additional £450 million to address immediate day-to-day pressures this year, with a further £400 million allocated for the 2027-28 and 2028-29 fiscal years. Bryant stated the package is intended to help the executive manage its current pressures, move towards a more sustainable financial footing, support public service transformation, and invest in social housing.

However, the offer falls short of the £1.6 billion in financial pressures identified by Stormont departments. A Sinn Féin spokesperson commented that the current offer "falls well short of what is required to fund, transform and improve our public services." The party also highlighted that Northern Ireland receives less funding than Scotland and Wales, suggesting that addressing this disparity could yield between £1 billion and £3 billion, enabling properly funded public services and fair pay for public sector workers.

The Northern Ireland Executive has been in negotiations with the government for increased funding for approximately six months, with the budget for the current financial year overdue. Bryant urged politicians to work together urgently to create a balanced budget based on the figures provided, acknowledging the broader financial landscape across the UK.
