The UK government has committed £30 million in investment to the SaxaVord Spaceport project in Shetland, Scotland. This funding is part of a broader £148 million investment across Europe aimed at bolstering the UK's space technology sector and enhancing its ability to launch satellites independently.
The investment is intended to support the construction of two additional launchpads at the Shetland facility. According to Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander, Scotland already leads Europe in satellite manufacturing, and with this investment, SaxaVord is positioned to handle a significant portion of the continent's orbital launch capacity. The initiative is designed to foster economic growth, strengthen national security, and support key technologies.
Lise Kaae, chief executive of Heartland, the majority stakeholder in SaxaVord Spaceport, expressed pleasure in welcoming the UK government as an investor and partner. The government stated that its new space strategy is focused on driving growth, enhancing security, and backing crucial modern technologies. The investment is contingent upon satisfactory due diligence and final approval.
