UK Government Allocates £7 Million for Northern Olympics Feasibility Study

The United Kingdom's Chancellor is set to allocate £7 million in the upcoming Budget towards a comprehensive feasibility study for a potential Northern England bid to host the Olympic Games in the 2040s. This funding will explore various aspects of hosting the international event, including potential venues, transport infrastructure, the distribution of games across cities, community benefits, estimated costs, and the overall prospect of a successful bid.

The decision follows a request earlier this year from UK Sport to examine the North's potential to host the Olympics, spurred by pressure from regional politicians. Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has previously expressed reservations about a northern-only bid, suggesting a nationwide approach that includes London would be more advantageous.

However, John Healey, a proponent of the northern bid, emphasized the transformative potential of hosting such a large-scale event in the region, stating, "The North hosting an event as big as this would be truly unforgettable." He indicated a commitment to accelerating the work required to explore this prestigious bid.

Previous attempts by Manchester to host the Olympic Games, for the 1996 and 2000 events, were unsuccessful. Historical documents suggest that a key factor in the failure of the 2000 bid was the perceived lack of appeal of Manchester as a destination compared to Sydney, which ultimately hosted the games.

Support for the idea has come from various quarters, including Olympians and Paralympians such as Dame Laura Kenny and Dame Sarah Storey. Andy Burnham, a prominent figure in the North, has also voiced his enthusiasm for the economic stimulus that hosting the Olympics could provide. He noted the unifying power of the Games and the UK's proven ability to stage major events, expressing a desire to explore how to replicate this success with broader national involvement.

The British Olympic Association, Paralympics GB, and UK Sport have welcomed the government's support for exploring a future bid. In a joint statement, they expressed anticipation for collaborating on the research and assessing the potential benefits for the nation and the global Olympic and Paralympic movements. The study will involve collaboration between the government, Northern Mayors, and the aforementioned sporting organizations.
