UK Government Allocates £7 Million for Northern Olympics Feasibility Study

The United Kingdom's Chancellor is set to allocate £7 million in the upcoming Budget for a comprehensive feasibility study into hosting the Olympic Games in northern England in the 2040s. The study will examine potential venues, transport infrastructure, and the economic benefits and costs associated with a bid.

This initiative follows pressure from Northern politicians and a request earlier this year from UK Sport to assess the region's potential to host the event. The effort aims to explore how the North could secure the prestigious games, with a focus on the 2040s timeline.

Manchester previously attempted to host the Summer Olympics, bidding for the 1996 Games, which were awarded to Atlanta, and again for the 2000 Games, which ultimately went to Sydney. Documents released in 2019 indicated that then-Tory MP Damian Green commented on the failure of the 2000 bid, suggesting that Manchester was a less appealing destination than Sydney.

Despite past setbacks, proponents of a northern bid, including Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham, believe the Olympics could unite the country and provide a significant economic boost. Burnham expressed a desire for people to experience the excitement of the Games in their own communities, not just through television.

Several Olympians and Paralympians, such as Dame Laura Kenny and Dame Sarah Storey, have publicly supported the idea of bringing the Games to the North. London Mayor Sadiq Khan has also commented on the plans, suggesting that a nationwide bid including London might be a preferable alternative to a solely northern one.

The funding for the study was welcomed by the British Olympic Association, Paralympics GB, and UK Sport. In a joint statement, they expressed their enthusiasm for exploring the potential of a future UK bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games, aiming to build on the legacy of the London 2012 Games and deliver benefits for the nation and the global movements.
