The UK Department for Education (DfE) is launching a new PE Partnership Network aimed at addressing a disparity in swimming instruction, particularly affecting disadvantaged children. The initiative seeks to ensure all primary school leavers can swim and understand water safety.
The network will foster collaboration between schools, local sports clubs, and national organizations such as Swim England. A spokesperson for the DfE stated that the program will offer "targeted support for the areas and pupils who need it most, so that every child, wherever they live, gets the same chance to learn to swim."
Swim England is working closely with the government on this initiative. A spokesperson for the organization emphasized that "swimming is a life skill, not just a sport, and every child should have the opportunity to leave primary school able to swim and be safe in, on and around water."
Schools have encountered considerable challenges in recent years, particularly those serving disadvantaged communities. These difficulties include competing curriculum demands, rising transportation expenses, and limited access to suitable swimming facilities. The DfE acknowledged these "real" challenges and highlighted the importance of a collective strategy to equip children with life-saving skills.
