Food in Community, a community interest company based in Dartington, is seeking to expand its operations to rescue hundreds of tonnes of surplus food from going to waste. The organization has been collecting unwanted and extra crops from local growers and farmers for 14 years with the goal of reducing waste and improving access to sustainably produced food.

Chantelle Norton, a director at Food in Community, highlighted that research from 2022 indicated that approximately 2.9 million tonnes of edible food are lost or wasted annually on UK farms. The charity's model involves packing rescued food into boxes for free doorstep deliveries to individuals. Any remaining produce is distributed to food banks, community fridges, lunch clubs, and youth groups.

The group primarily serves Devon but also sends items to Cornwall. To further its mission, Food in Community is looking to collaborate with more farmers, volunteers, and business partners to save additional food from waste. The organization's efforts aim to ensure that edible food is appreciated and utilized rather than discarded.

Volunteers play a crucial role in the charity's operations, assisting with the packing of fresh produce into delivery boxes. Sandra Crawford, the box manager for Food in Community, stands in front of rows of crates filled with fruit and vegetables. Behind her, volunteers are busy packing fresh produce into delivery boxes. She has shoulder length brown hair and is wearing a short sleeved blouse beneath a lime green high visibility vest. The organization's work also extends to engaging young people, with teenagers participating in food preparation under supervision in a kitchen setting. Three teenagers prepare food in a kitchen under the supervision of a youth worker. All are wearing lime green aprons. One young woman chops a red pepper beside a container of mushrooms, while a young man in a black T shirt stands nearby. In the background, another young man washes food at a sink as the youth worker looks on smiling.
