Fire services across the United Kingdom are under "incredible pressure" due to eleven major fires and 43 new wildfires reported since Friday, according to a fire chief. Phil Garrigan of the National Fire Chief's Council (NFCC) stated that major incidents have been declared in multiple locations, including Stourbridge, Sandwell, Pershore, and Stoke-on-Trent in the West Midlands, as well as in Hampshire and South Wales.
Residents forced to evacuate their homes are still awaiting information on when they will be permitted to return. In Stourbridge, where 38 houses sustained damage or were destroyed, frustrated locals have expressed uncertainty about their return, though some hope to go back later on Saturday. West Midlands Assistant Chief Fire Officer Simon Barry confirmed that the fire in Stourbridge was under control, with crews working to extinguish remaining hot spots. He indicated that homes were no longer considered at risk and expressed hope that some residents could return home on Saturday evening.
Dudley Council chief executive Balvinder Hera urged residents not to return to their homes until explicitly authorized by officials. She noted that decisions regarding road reopenings are being made on a street-by-street basis in coordination with emergency services. Police are seeking public assistance, including information or video footage, to aid in their inquiries and have cautioned against speculation regarding the cause of the fires.
The Dudley Council has established an online fund to support those affected by the fires.
