UK Faces Renewed Migrant Influx as Two Dinghies Land on Kent Coast
Home Secretary orders urgent review following two undetected landings and a prolonged journey from Normandy.
The United Kingdom has experienced a surge in small-boat migrant arrivals, with two separate dinghy landings on the Kent coast in as many days and a lengthy voyage from Normandy bringing dozens ashore.
Up to 30 migrants reached a beach at Samphire Hoe, between Dover and Folkestone, on Tuesday. This incident followed a landing of seven migrants near Folkestone the previous day. In a separate event, 51 migrants completed a 38-hour journey from Normandy before being brought ashore at Dover.
In response to the renewed pressure on border security, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has ordered an urgent review by the Border Security Command. "This was not acceptable. Our improved monitoring has led to uncontrolled crossings becoming incredibly rare. But even one is one too many," Mahmood stated. She added that the review would assess how the landings occurred and what measures are needed to prevent future occurrences.
Officials confirmed that 21 individuals were detained after the Tuesday landing at Samphire Hoe. This site is believed to have seen the largest single landing since August 2021, when 26 migrants arrived on Ramsgate beach. Witnesses reported that the group seen on Tuesday made their way up the beach and headed west, with police attempting to track them.
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp criticized the government's handling of the situation, stating, "Shabana Mahmood has clearly lost control of our borders and illegal immigrants are now crossing the Channel at will." He further commented that the recent crossings, including the extended journey from Normandy, should serve as a wake-up call.
Adding to the concerning developments, the body of a man in his 20s was discovered on a beach near Neufchâtel-Hardelot in northern France. This discovery occurred shortly after a taxi boat with dozens of migrants on board was observed departing.
Official figures indicate that 150 small-boat arrivals were recorded on Monday and 154 on Tuesday, bringing the total for the year to 17,784. These figures do not include the 51 individuals from the Normandy voyage or those from other dinghies brought into Dover.
