UK Faces Potential £1 Billion Bill for Renewed Channel Deal with France

British taxpayers could face a bill approaching £1 billion to renew the United Kingdom's security agreement with France aimed at curbing illegal crossings of the English Channel. The head of a French parliamentary commission studying the beach patrol agreements stated that the cost could escalate by 40%, potentially exceeding €1 billion (approximately £860 million).

In April, Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood finalized a new three-year accord with the French government valued at £662 million, succeeding a £479 million deal from 2023. However, French politician Sebastien Huyghe, leading an inquiry into these agreements, warned of future demands.

"If the situation continues, we could find ourselves demanding a further 40 per cent increase in three years' time, which would bring the total to €1 billion," Huyghe said. "However, I am not sure the British would agree to increase funding by 40 per cent every three years simply because their country is attractive."

Huyghe's commission estimates that approximately one-third of migrants illegally entering the European Union are targeting the UK, totaling about 60,000 out of 170,000 last year. This trend is attributed to the perceived ease of securing refugee status in the UK.

"We have learnt that 71 per cent of those who manage to cross the English Channel or the North Sea are subsequently granted refugee status, which is a huge figure. I understand why they are willing to take every risk," Huyghe remarked.

He also called for a reassessment of the 22-year-old Le Touquet agreement, which permits border checks to be conducted before travelers depart from each nation.

Migrants continue to attempt crossings, with one incident last month involving a "mega dinghy" carrying 165 individuals. French police have been observed monitoring migrant departures from beaches near Dunkirk.
