UK Explores Northern Olympics Bid with £7 Million Feasibility Study
The UK government is investing in a study to assess the potential of a northern England bid for the Olympic and Paralympic Games in the 2040s.
The UK government is allocating £7 million in Chancellor John Healey's budget for a feasibility study into hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games in northern England. The study will examine the practicalities of such a bid, including potential venues, transport infrastructure, and economic benefits.
This initiative is a collaboration between the government, UK Sport, the Northern Mayors, and the British Olympic and Paralympic associations. The feasibility report will delve into the specifics of how northern England could host the Games, considering different city-sharing models and the potential advantages for local communities.
A critical aspect of the study will be to assess the cost implications and the likelihood of a bid's success. Historically, hosting the Games has involved significant financial commitments. The 2012 London Olympics, for instance, were estimated to have cost £8.9 billion, though a 2013 report by UK Trade and Investment suggested an economic boost of £9.9 billion through new contracts, sales, and foreign investments. However, these figures were subject to scrutiny by organizations like the Federation of Small Businesses and the National Institute of Economic and Social Research.
"Olympic legacy lasts way beyond the celebration of sport over the summer," stated Healey. "The North hosting an event as big as this would be truly unforgettable. Britain's experience of London 2012 is proof we can host the world. I'm picking up the pace on our work to potentially bid for these prestigious games. It will lift communities, create opportunities and give the UK a huge boost."
Organizations including the British Olympic Association, ParalympicsGB, and UK Sport welcomed the government's support for exploring a future bid. In a joint statement, they expressed enthusiasm for partnering on the study, aiming to build on the legacy of the London 2012 Games and explore the potential benefits for the nation and the global Olympic and Paralympic movements. The target timeframe for a potential bid is the 2040s.
