UK Detective Investigated Over Alleged Inappropriate Use of AI in Investigations
An independent inquiry will examine a senior detective's use of Microsoft Copilot during criminal investigations, following allegations of misconduct.
A senior detective in the UK is under investigation for alleged gross misconduct related to the inappropriate use of artificial intelligence during criminal investigations. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) confirmed it has launched an independent investigation into the officer's actions.
Derbyshire Constabulary authorized the use of Microsoft Copilot for its officers in May 2025, providing guidance for its application in tasks such as drafting reports and summarizing information. However, the authorization came with explicit conditions, including a prohibition on inputting operational, sensitive, or personal data into the AI system.
The IOPC's investigation will focus on the detective's use of Copilot between May 2025 and June of the current year. Investigators will assess whether these actions constitute potential breaches of police professional standards. The IOPC stated that it decided to conduct a thorough and independent investigation after evaluating the details presented in the referral.
Emily Barry, the IOPC's director of engagement, emphasized the seriousness of the allegations and the necessity of a comprehensive, independent inquiry. The outcome of this investigation will determine if the officer is found to have violated established police conduct rules.
