UK Defense Secretary Warns of War Within 1,000 Days
Wes Streeting urges preparedness as Russia escalates threats, while Chancellor outlines a 'downpayment' on defense spending.
Britain must prepare for the possibility of war within 1,000 days, as Russia intensifies its threats to NATO allies, according to Defense Secretary Wes Streeting.
Streeting cautioned that adversaries could be in a position to attack by 2030, urging the nation to "prepare for the worst." His stark warning precedes the upcoming Budget, where Chancellor John Healey is expected to allocate billions toward new defense spending. This funding is intended to signal an initial commitment towards the goal of increasing defense expenditure to 3% of GDP by 2030, a target that the government is not expected to fully detail until next year's spending review.
In an article for The Telegraph, Streeting stated that "the gravest dangers of the 20th Century are returning, armed with the technologies of the 21st." He highlighted the increasing threat of state-sponsored terrorism, sabotage, and hostile actions aimed at disrupting daily life and undermining security. "To prevent the worst, we have to prepare for it," Streeting wrote, emphasizing the need to expand capabilities to deter potential adversaries. "Should that fail, we must ensure that Britain is ready for war."
The Defense Secretary expressed confidence that both Chancellor Healey and Prime Minister Andy Burnham are committed to meeting the NATO defense spending target. He drew a parallel to the conflict in Ukraine, noting how rapidly battlefield tactics and technologies have evolved. "Our adversaries' willingness to harm us is not new. What has changed is their capacity," Streeting asserted. "By 2030 their force strength and war economy could put them in a position to attack. That gives us a little over 1,000 days to complete our mission: to be ready with our allies to fight and win."
The allocated funds are reportedly earmarked for the state-owned National Wealth Fund and the British Business Bank, with investments targeted towards UK defense firms, including drone manufacturers and military technology companies. However, this approach of increasing defense spending through long-term borrowing has drawn criticism from the opposition, who advocate for spending cuts in other areas, such as the welfare budget.
Conservative shadow defense secretary James Cartlidge acknowledged the proposal as a response to their own earlier plans for a sovereign defense fund, which included redirecting the National Wealth Fund's investments from Net Zero initiatives to defense. Cartlidge welcomed the move to support UK startups and defense tech businesses but stressed the need for a comprehensive funding plan to reach the 3% GDP target, warning that without it, crucial areas like training and ammunition stockpiles could be neglected.
